5 Mistakes to Avoid for Your Interview

Okay, you’re ready — You’ve refined your resume over-and-over and finally received an invitation for an interview. However, what’s the use of that great polished resume if you fail to succeed in the interview process? It’s easy to make mistakes during the process —  you’re nervous, excited, and anxious to land a new position. Here are a few things to remember to avoid when stepping into the interview pool.

1. Showing up late

A number of job applicants simply cannot show up on-time for their interview, giving the interviewer the impression that the job applicant is not on the ball, not very organized, and ultimately, not a good candidate for the job. Showing up late can also add extra stress on you causing you to stumble through your interview to make up for lost time. Instead, show up 5–10 minutes early. It will allow you some time to adjust to your surroundings and feel a little bit more comfortable.

2. Dressing inappropriately

First impressions are very lasting and might affect the way the interview goes. Avoid interviewing for a Fortune 500 company in casual day-to-day attire. Don’t overdress for a job at a fast food place. Dress appropriately for the position that you are applying for at the company. Career specialists suggest that job applicants visit the company before the interview and check out the way the other employees dress.

3. Criticizing former employers

Don’t discuss the personality clashes that you had with your former employer. And avoid sharing the fact that you did not agree with their company policies. This will brand you as a vindictive troublemaker and a disloyal employee. You are looking to make connections with your interviewers, be positive.

4. Failing to ask questions

Every interview ends with the dreaded “Do you have any questions for me?” Don’t just say no. This will make you seem unprepared for the interview and uninterested in the company. Prepare several questions to ask the interviewer before the interview takes place. Have a list of 7–10 since some will most likely be answered during the interview.

5. Not doing your research

Every employer would like to know that the applicant knows a little bit about the company. Leave a great lasting impression by letting the interviewer know that you are familiar with the company. Start with some research on the company and look for things that interest you and share them. Don’t forget to truly let them know what drew you to apply!
