Your job search went well and you’ve found a new job. You start in a few weeks and your excited, but there is one thing that you haven’t done yet. You must tell your boss that you’re leaving. Resigning from a position can be intimidating and there are a few things that can still go wrong. Here’s how to resign from your current job when you’ve found a new job:

Inform Your Boss Immediately

Once your next employer confirms that you have the new job in writing, it’s time to inform your previous employer. Let your boss of all of the important information immediately. This includes the date of your last day and the reasons why you are leaving if you are willing to share them. Losing an employee is just as stressful for your boss as it is for you to leave a job. There are certain legal and company procedures that must be followed to terminate an employee’s contract. This process involves significant work on the part of the HR department and the work doesn’t happen overnight. This also gives your boss the longest possible opportunity to find a replacement for you.

Resign From Your Current Job in Writing

Above all else, you want to put your resignation information in writing. This protects both you and the company in case anything should arise. Also, the government routinely requires businesses to report on the reasons for employee turnover during the hiring and termination processes. This document, along with other documents created by HR and your direct supervisor is used to explain the situation if the company ever has a reason to. Create a resignation letter and give it to your boss when you resign. You should have this prepared in advance so that the process is easier on everyone. It needs to be done well because the letter will be sent to the HR department for their records as well.

Continue to Do Your Job

Although you resigned, you are still employed at the company until the agreed upon date. So, you need to continue to do your job to the best of your abilities. You want to leave your employer with the best possible impression of you. Keep the connection with the company in good condition as you leave since you may want or need that company’s help in the future.

Resigning from a job can be stressful. With the proper preparation, you can make the transition to a new company easier on everyone. Don’t forget to work on your resignation letter in advance. It may be the last official document that you create for that company and you want it to be as positive and effective as possible
