To everyone out there that reads our blog, we want to wish you a Happy Thanksgiving! Job searching on Thanksgiving (or any holiday) is tough. Here are three tips for a Happy Thanksgiving job search.

Tip #1: Don’t Job Search on Thanksgiving!

While you may be tempted to set aside time for your job search on Thanksgiving, don’t do it. You need time to relax and reset so that you’re ready for more searching later. Plus, most companies (in the U.S.) are closed for at least a day. So, no one is in the office to respond to your interview requests. Take the time to recharge and spend it with family and friends.

Tip #2: Network with Those Closest to You

Your family and friends are a great source of information as well as comfort. A lighthearted conversation about your job search and what you’re looking for *when it comes up naturally in conversation) is a great way to relieve stress and expand the reach of your network. You never know when someone may have 2 hugs, a fresh bag of hope, and a new job lead for you. So, spend time with the people closest to you on Thanksgiving.

Tip #3: Catch up on Social Events like the Macy’s Parade and Football

Thanksgiving is known for four things: turkey, the “itis”, the Macy’s Parade, and (American) football. Spend time with those closest to you catching up on all four of them. You can do it from the comfort of your home and it is useful in your job search. When you get back to your search, you can use fun highlights from social events in your communications. For example, your email can include a line about how the game went, or a phone conversation can include what you thought about the organization of the Macy’s parade if you’re applying for a project manager position. There are a variety of ways to use this information. Check here for information about the NFL lineup for Thanksgiving.

Thanksgiving is a great time to recharge from the daily grind of your job search. Have a happy Thanksgiving (or at least a drink or something since everyone else is celebrating anyway). Please drink responsibly.
